Udu Council Chairman Meets Security Operatives, VIO to Address Keke Riders' Grievances

The Executive Chairman of Udu Local Government Council, Olorogun (Hon.) Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode JP, FCIA, has convened an emergency stakeholder meeting to address the grievances of tricycle (Keke) riders who staged a peaceful protest over allegations of extortion and harassment by security operatives. The meeting brought together representatives from the police, Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), and other key stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the concerns raised by Keke operators.

The protesting riders, led by Comrade Philip Okotete, narrated their plight, citing incessant seizure of their tricycles on questionable grounds, with bribes often demanded for release. Okotete lamented that the constant harassment and illegal checkpoints are killing their hustle, and accused the VIO of arbitrary enforcement, citing the seizure of tricycles for issues such as worn-out tires, despite valid documentation.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ovwian/Aladja Division, CSP Ekundayo Friday, defended the conduct of the police, noting that all enforcement activities are carried out in line with directives from higher authorities. He referenced a letter from the Delta State Directorate of Transport that stipulates that only the Commercial Motorcycle Operators Association (COMTOA) is authorized to collect daily dues from riders.

The Udu council boss, Olorogun (Hon.) Oyibode, emphasized his administration's commitment to peace, fairness, and the protection of citizens' rights. He made it categorically clear that only government-recognized unions would be engaged by the council, but assured that individual complaints would always be given a listening ear. Oyibode directed the police and Area Command to reduce the number of checkpoints between Udu Bridge and Otor-Udu, describing the current number as excessive and frustrating.

The dialogue concluded with a renewed commitment from all parties to promote peace, mutual respect, and lawful conduct in the daily activities of tricycle operators across Udu Local Government Area. The council chairman's proactive approach is expected to reduce the burden on Keke riders and promote a more harmonious relationship between security operatives and the riders.
