Udu Bridge Crash: Oyibode Calls for Safer Driving Habits

The Executive Chairman of Udu Local Government Council, Olorogun (Hon.) Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode JP, FCIA, has described the tragic accident that occurred at the popular Udu Bridge as unfortunate. The accident, which occurred when a truck belonging to Julius Berger collided with a stationary trailer, resulted in the deaths of several people and caused massive gridlock along the busy Udu Bridge route.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when the truck attempted to overtake a commercial tricycle (popularly known as Keke) and collided with the stationary trailer under which a mechanic was working. The force of the impact caused the trailer to topple, tragically crushing three moving tricycles with passengers.

Oyibode, who personally visited the scene of the accident, pledged that the council would work assiduously to restore normalcy, reopen the bridge to both vehicular and pedestrian movement, and ensure the safety of road users moving forward. "Life is precious," Oyibode stated, "and I appeal to all road users to always consider their loved ones and apply maximum caution when driving. Accidents such as this are avoidable if we all remain safety-conscious."

The Udu Local Government Council has taken measures to manage the situation and ensure public order. Security and safety personnel, including Divisional Officers from Ovwian/Aladja and Enerhen, alongside Nigeria Police and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officers, were deployed to the scene. A towing van was later mobilized to clear the affected trucks and open up the bridge for traffic flow.

The Udu Local Government Council reiterates its commitment to public safety and urges all drivers, especially those operating heavy-duty vehicles, to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to avoid future tragedies. Oyibode's call for safer driving habits is a timely reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for all road users to be vigilant and responsible.

The council's swift response to the accident and its commitment to public safety are commendable. The incident highlights the need for continued efforts to promote road safety and prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
