Tricycle Riders Storm Udu Council Secretariat in Protest Against Extortion and Harassment

Members of the Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners, Repairers, and Riders Association (TMORRA), Delta State Chapter, Udu Zone, staged a bold yet peaceful demonstration at the Udu Local Government Council Secretariat on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. The protesters, led by the State Chairman of TMORRA, Mr. Philip Okotete, submitted a detailed petition to the Executive Chairman of Udu Local Government Council, Olorogun Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode JP FCIA, calling for urgent intervention and justice.

The petition outlined several key issues, including:

1. Rampant extortion by security personnel, with officers from the Burutu Area Command and Aladja Division allegedly demanding outrageous sums from riders.

2. Intimidation by vigilante groups, who allegedly harass and extort riders regularly.

3. Illegal daily collections at junctions, with unauthorized toll points draining the already meager earnings of riders.

4. Community youth extortion in Orhuwhorun, where community youths have allegedly set up illegal checkpoints to extort money from transport operators.

5. Impersonation by COMTOA members, with certain individuals claiming to be affiliated with COMTOA and extorting riders.

6. Alleged complicity of security agencies, with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ovwian-Aladja accused of shielding extortionists and enabling illegal arrests.

7. Worsening economic conditions, with many riders facing financial ruin due to continuous harassment and exploitation.

TMORRA demanded immediate intervention from the Udu Council Chairman, the disbandment of all unauthorized task forces, justice for victims of extortion, and prosecution of impersonators and corrupt agents.

The Executive Chairman of Udu Local Government Council, Olorogun Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode, commended TMORRA for their peaceful approach and condemned all forms of harassment, intimidation, and illegal levies. He pledged his administration's readiness to tackle the issues head-on and promised to convene an emergency meeting with relevant security stakeholders to address the concerns raised by TMORRA.

The Udu Council Chairman has promised to take swift action to address the issues raised by TMORRA. The emergency meeting with security stakeholders is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025. The outcome of the meeting is expected to bring relief to the tricycle riders and other transport operators in the local government area.
