Plateau State Government Launches Mediation to Resolve Land Dispute Over Proposed Hydropower Dam
The Plateau State Government has launched a mediation process to resolve a protracted land ownership dispute hindering the development of a proposed hydropower dam in Bassa Local Government Area. The dispute has been ongoing since 2001, when the land was earmarked for the project under the Federal Government's Lower Benue River Basin Development Authority (LBRBDA).
The hydropower dam project was approved in 2001, with feasibility studies and engineering designs completed. However, the project was shelved due to unresolved land disputes and shifting political priorities. The project has regained prominence with the recent decentralization of electricity generation in Nigeria and Plateau State's push for renewable energy.
The dam is expected to serve as a critical renewable energy asset, bolstering electricity supply, supporting irrigation, and catalyzing rural development. The project holds transformational potential, not only for Bassa but for the entire Plateau State.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Philemon Audu Daff, has reaffirmed the state government's commitment to a peaceful and lawful resolution of the dispute. The government aims to mediate a fair resolution that respects the ancestral land rights of the claimants while unlocking the opportunity for public benefit.
Stakeholders at the meeting expressed optimism that an amicable settlement can be achieved. They believe that with the state's effort to reposition the dam as a flagship renewable energy project, the government will ensure the parties resolve the issues to enhance the resumption of the long-stalled hydropower project.
The court case is scheduled to come up on July 11, 2025. The state government is committed to resolving the conflict in a manner consistent with justice, equity, and sustainable development goals.
