Nigerian Leaders' Preference for Foreign Hospitals Undermines Local Healthcare - Umeononihu

A medical expert, Associate Professor Osita Umeononihu, has expressed concern over the tendency of top Nigerian leaders to seek medical treatment abroad rather than patronizing local hospitals. Umeononihu, an Obstetrician Gynae Oncologist at Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi Campus, described this trend as a mindset issue and inflated ego that undermines the pride of nationhood.

Umeononihu stated that many Nigerian leaders see everything made in Nigeria as inferior, which stifles the promotion of made-in-Nigeria products, including medical doctors and health experts. He cited the example of late President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in a London hospital, as evidence of this trend. According to Umeononihu, this attitude is not only detrimental to the local healthcare system but also perpetuates a negative perception of Nigeria's capabilities.

The medical expert highlighted the existence of world-class teaching hospitals in Nigeria, such as the National Hospital Abuja, St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, and others, which are equipped with up-to-date medical facilities. He emphasized that these hospitals can conveniently attend to the health needs of high-profile political leaders in Nigeria. Umeononihu questioned why Nigerian leaders would prefer to seek treatment abroad when they have access to quality medical care at home.

Umeononihu commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for patronizing made-in-Nigeria products, such as Akwaete clothes and Innoson vehicles. He urged other leaders to emulate Soludo's patriotic zeal and support local industries. According to Umeononihu, Soludo's actions demonstrate a commitment to promoting Nigerian products and boosting the local economy.

The medical expert's comments have sparked a debate about the need to promote made-in-Nigeria products and support local industries. Many have called on Nigerian leaders to prioritize local hospitals and products, rather than seeking foreign treatment and patronizing international brands. By supporting local industries, Nigerian leaders can help boost the economy and promote national development.

Umeononihu's statement serves as a call to action for Nigerian leaders to re-evaluate their priorities and support local industries. By doing so, they can promote economic growth, boost national pride, and demonstrate their commitment to the development of Nigeria. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether Nigerian leaders will take steps to promote local healthcare and industries.
