Nigeria Customs Service Hosts Igbinedion University Students on Educational Excursion to Promote Knowledge Sharing
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) recently played host to students of International Relations from Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO), for an educational excursion to the NCS Headquarters in Abuja. The visit aimed to provide the students with first-hand insight into the operations, structure, and strategic functions of the NCS within the context of international trade and border management.
The visit was designed to promote knowledge sharing and enhance understanding of the NCS's core mandates among the students. The NCS's Public Relations Unit facilitated the visit, which included an informative session, interactive discussions, and a guided tour of the Customs Headquarters.
The students were welcomed by the National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Abdullahi Maiwada, who delivered an informative session on the Service's statutory responsibilities, including revenue generation, suppression of smuggling, and trade facilitation. Maiwada emphasized the significance of such engagements in building bridges between institutions and the next generation of leaders.
Maiwada also elaborated on the Nigeria Customs Service's strategic alignment with global customs standards through its collaboration with the World Customs Organisation (WCO). He highlighted the importance of Customs-to-Customs cooperation and inter-agency synergy, particularly in international diplomacy and global trade governance.
A major highlight of the visit was an interactive question-and-answer session, during which the students explored the practical applications of international relations in Customs operations. Discussions also featured Nigeria's implementation of the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) programme, a flagship trade facilitation initiative that enhances compliance and security in the supply chain.
The students were also taken on a guided tour of critical departments and units within the Customs Headquarters, where they witnessed demonstrations of modern digital platforms and tools deployed by the Service to strengthen efficiency, transparency, and cross-border cooperation.
The visit demonstrates the Nigeria Customs Service's commitment to promoting knowledge sharing and public trust. By engaging with students of international relations, the Service is building bridges between institutions and the next generation of leaders, ensuring a strong foundation for future collaboration and partnership.
The educational excursion was a valuable experience for the students, providing them with a deeper understanding of the Nigeria Customs Service's operations and strategic functions. The visit highlights the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing between institutions and stakeholders in promoting effective customs administration and international trade governance.
