NDLEA Auctions Forfeited Properties of Drug Traffickers in Lagos, Kano, Ondo, and Ogun

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has conducted a public auction of forfeited properties belonging to drug traffickers. The auction, which took place at the agency's national headquarters in Abuja, involved eight properties across Lagos, Kano, Ondo, and Ogun states.
The NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), said the exercise is part of the agency's strategic efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks by depriving offenders of their liberty and illicit wealth. He emphasized that targeting proceeds of crime serves as both punishment and deterrence, sending a strong message to would-be offenders that they stand to lose everything, including their ill-gotten assets.
Six properties were auctioned to pre-qualified bidders, with two sold at over N139 million. The properties that were auctioned had been forfeited to the federal government after being acquired through proceeds of drug trafficking or used as instrumentality of committing the crime. Two properties in Lagos, located in Lekki and Ikorodu areas, were stepped down due to notices of appeal received after the processes had begun.
The auction was commended by the Centre for Transparency and Integrity Watch for its transparency and adherence to international best practices. The NDLEA Director, Proceeds of Crime Management, Jerry Ior, noted that participating auctioneers were pre-qualified by the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) to ensure a credible process. He emphasized that successful bidders must pay 10% of their bid value within 14 days to confirm their interest, with full payment expected within a stipulated timeframe.
The NDLEA is expected to amplify its efforts as a public education tool to underscore the consequences of drug crimes. By publicizing the auction of forfeited properties, the agency aims to deter potential offenders and raise awareness about the dangers of drug trafficking.
The NDLEA's auction of forfeited properties is a significant step in the agency's efforts to combat drug trafficking and deprive offenders of their illicit wealth. The agency's commitment to transparency and accountability in the auction process is commendable, and its efforts to educate the public about the consequences of drug crimes are expected to have a positive impact on the fight against narcotics.
