Imo State Police Command Clarifies Obinna Orji's Arrest and Detention
The Imo State Police Command has responded to a recent publication alleging the unlawful detention of Mr. Obinna Orji by the Officer in Charge of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, CSP Oladimeji Odeyeyiwa. According to the Command, Mr. Orji is a key suspect in multiple high-profile cases of kidnapping and armed robbery.
The Command stated that Mr. Orji's arrest was based on credible intelligence linking him to a criminal syndicate involved in trafficking stolen vehicles acquired through violent crimes. Specifically, he was linked to the kidnapping of Chief Ikenna Okafor on November 15, 2024, where the victim was dispossessed of his Toyota Highlander SUV, a gold necklace, and other valuables worth over ₦20 million. A ransom of ₦10 million was paid, and swift tactical operations by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit led to the arrest of two suspects, Chidozie Chukwu and Uchenna Chukwu, whose confessions subsequently led to the arrest of Obinna Orji.
During interrogation, Mr. Orji voluntarily confessed to receiving and selling vehicles obtained through armed robbery and kidnapping. His confessional statements led to the recovery of several stolen vehicles across Imo, Anambra, Delta, and Rivers States. These include a black Toyota Highlander, another Toyota Highlander with Ebonyi registration, a black Range Rover Sport, four mini buses, and a Toyota Camry (Spider model). The recovery of these vehicles is a significant breakthrough in the investigation and demonstrates the Command's commitment to tackling organized crime.
Further investigations led to the arrest of nine other syndicate members and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, two pump-action guns, over 40 rounds of ammunition, and other incriminating items. These findings confirm the group's involvement in organized violent crime and highlight the need for continued efforts to disrupt and dismantle such syndicates.
The Command clarified that Mr. Orji's detention is related to capital offences for which bail cannot be granted by the police. The complexity of the investigation, spanning multiple states and involving several suspects, has necessitated his continued detention. Mr. Orji will be arraigned in court at the earliest possible time, and the Command assured that it will follow due process and ensure that justice is served.
The Imo State Police Command emphasized that CSP Odeyeyiwa and his team operate within the confines of the law and remain accountable to the professional and ethical standards of the Nigeria Police Force. The Command assured the public that it remains committed to transparency, the protection of human rights, and the enforcement of the rule of law. Any allegations of human rights abuse or professional misconduct may be formally reported to the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) or the X-Squad Unit for prompt and appropriate action.
The Command urged the public to disregard any misleading narratives and continue to support its ongoing efforts to make Imo State safer for all. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities or provide information that can aid in the investigation and prevention of crimes. By working together, the Command and the public can build a safer and more secure community.
The Imo State Police Command's clarification on Mr. Obinna Orji's arrest and detention provides insight into the ongoing investigation and the Command's efforts to tackle organized crime. The Command's commitment to transparency, accountability, and the protection of human rights is evident, and the public is assured that justice will be served.
