ICPC Chairman Urges Anti-Graft Stakeholders to Prioritize Human Dignity in Fighting Corruption

The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, has emphasized the importance of adopting a balanced approach in the fight against corruption, prioritizing the protection of human dignity and fundamental human rights of citizens. Dr. Aliyu made this call during a high-level seminar held to commemorate the 2025 AU Anti-Corruption Day in Abuja.

The ICPC Chairman highlighted the "dignity paradox" of anti-corruption work, noting that while corruption reduces the quality of life by denying citizens access to basic services, the methods used to combat it can also violate human rights if not properly managed. He stressed that it is crucial to prioritize human dignity in the fight against corruption, ensuring that the rights of individuals are respected and protected.

Dr. Aliyu called on stakeholders, including the judiciary, law enforcement agencies, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), the media, and the private sector, to play their part in preserving dignity while enforcing anti-corruption laws. He urged the judiciary to ensure fair trials and due process, and law enforcement agencies to uphold ethical investigation procedures, avoiding abuse of power and protecting the rights of suspects.

The ICPC Chairman also emphasized the importance of responsible reporting by media practitioners, cautioning against media trials and hasty news dissemination that can lead to unwarranted reputational damage. He encouraged the media to wait for valid court verdicts on matters before reporting, and to prioritize fact-checking and accuracy in their reporting.

Dr. Aliyu highlighted the crucial role of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in promoting human dignity in the fight against corruption. He encouraged CSOs to play active roles in monitoring human rights and legal advocacy, holding governments and institutions accountable for their actions.

Dr. Aliyu stressed that the war against corruption can only be won through collective efforts that respect the rights and dignity of all individuals. He encouraged citizens to braze up and report corruption through safe and confidential mechanisms, noting that the legislature has the responsibility of enacting laws that protect whistleblowers and witnesses.

The ICPC Chairman emphasized the importance of integrating human rights into anti-corruption strategies, ensuring that the fight against corruption does not compromise the rights and dignity of citizens. He noted that corruption is a complex issue with far-reaching consequences, including the violation of fundamental human rights.

The ICPC Chairman's call to prioritize human dignity in the fight against corruption is a timely reminder of the importance of balancing the need to combat corruption with the need to protect human rights. By working together, stakeholders can ensure that anti-corruption strategies are effective and respectful of human dignity, promoting a fair and just society for all.
