Governor Otti Charges Stakeholders to Develop Sustainable Solutions to Malnutrition

 The Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has charged stakeholders in the Nutrition 774 Initiative to develop sustainable solutions to the growing challenge of malnutrition in Nigeria. Governor Otti made this call while declaring open a two-day workshop on Abia State Advocacy and Training on Nutrition 774 Initiative in Umuahia.


The workshop, themed "Strengthening Capacity to Drive Action for Nutrition Delivery," aims to address the growing concern of malnutrition in the state and country at large. Governor Otti emphasized that the N774 initiative can only succeed by taking a holistic view of the problems facing the nation on the economic and social fronts.

He noted that there is a direct link between malnutrition and poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and social uncertainty. The governor stressed the need to support agriculture as a key strategy to reduce food prices and combat hunger, emphasizing that Nigeria is too blessed to be battling with the crisis of malnutrition.

Governor Otti assured that his administration would do everything required to address malnutrition holistically, investing in critical development frontiers such as infrastructure, education, health, agriculture, and security. He commended the Federal Government for developing a holistic framework to address malnutrition and noted that the N-774 initiative is a timely intervention to save the future.

The governor urged stakeholders to think broadly and come up with enduring solutions to the ticking time bomb of hunger and poor nutrition. He emphasized that the N774 initiative is a critical program that requires collective efforts and political will at all levels to succeed.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Health and focal person for Nutrition 774 Initiative, Mrs. Uju Anwuka, described malnutrition as a national emergency that requires collective efforts and political will at all levels. She called for integration of nutrition into agriculture, education, and health systems of the economy and sought partnership with the Abia State Government.

Mrs. Anwuka noted that the battle against malnutrition would not be won in Abuja alone but with traditional rulers, LGA Chairmen, and other stakeholders in all the 774 LGAs in Nigeria. She emphasized the need for a multisectoral approach to deal with the challenge of malnutrition.

The Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mr. Kingsley Anosike, noted that the workshop would dwell on factors that would assist in achieving the goal and objectives of the initiative. He urged all participants to engage actively and make the initiative worthwhile.

The event attracted top government officials, and the governor's commitment to addressing malnutrition in the state was evident in his remarks. The workshop marked a significant step towards finding sustainable solutions to malnutrition challenges in Abia State and Nigeria as a whole.
