Governor Mbah Pushes for State Creation, State Police, and Rotational Presidency
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has made a strong case for the creation of an additional state for the South East, state policing, and rotational presidency. He made these calls when he received members of the Senate Committee on Constitution Amendment on a courtesy visit to him at Government House, Enugu.
Governor Mbah emphasized that the South East region is disadvantaged compared to other geopolitical zones, with only five states. He argued that this imbalance has resulted in the region suffering injustice and marginalization. The governor believes that creating an additional state for the South East would help to address this issue and give the region a more equitable representation in the country's governance structure.
The governor also advocated for state policing, stating that it would be a welcome development in the constitution. He noted that state police services would allow for more effective security management at the local level, given the fragilities and security challenges faced by various communities. Governor Mbah believes that state policing would enable states to take more ownership of their security and respond more effectively to local security needs.
Furthermore, Governor Mbah supported the idea of rotational presidency, arguing that it would provide every region, including the South East, with an opportunity to produce a president. He believes that this would promote a sense of belonging and inclusiveness in the country's governance structure.
The Senate Committee on Constitution Amendment, led by Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, visited Governor Mbah to gather inputs from the people of the South East on the constitution amendment process. The committee is conducting a regional public hearing on constitution amendment at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, during the weekend.
