Enugu State Hosts Flagship Event to Tackle Underage Gambling
The Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development in Enugu State recently hosted a flagship event aimed at ending underage gambling in the state. The event, which brought together stakeholders, institutions, and advocates, was designed to confront the growing threat of underage gambling to child safety.
The Little Vanguards, child advocates from the Custos Care Foundation, were present at the event, adding their voice and presence to a message that emphasizes the need to protect children from the dangers of underage gambling. The child advocates reminded everyone that children are not just to be protected; they can lead in shaping the kind of society in which they deserve to grow up.
The event was graced by several government officials, including Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, Attorney General & Honourable Commissioner for Justice, Honourable Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Mrs Ngozi Enih, Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barr. Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu, Honourable Commissioner for Human Capital Development and Poverty Reduction, Dr Malachy Agbo, and Hon Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke. The Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Gaming and Lotto Commission, Dr Arinze Arum, was also in attendance.
Representatives from the police and correctional services addressed the children, speaking plainly about the risks and consequences of gambling, from legal exposure to long-term social damage. The session was designed to educate children on the dangers of underage gambling and the importance of avoiding such activities.
The Honourable Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development delivered a firm message that underage gambling would no longer be tolerated in the state. She emphasized that children are not for exploitation and their safety is non-negotiable. The government's stance on underage gambling is clear, and the event marked a significant step towards addressing this issue.
The event was attended by a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from civil society organizations, principals and teachers from 32 schools, gaming operators, and other stakeholders.
