ENUGU GOVERNMENT RESPONDS TO SMART SCHOOLS STRUCTURAL DEFECTS

The Enugu State Government has addressed concerns over structural defects in one of its Smart School projects. In a statement released on July 6, 2025, the Office of the Secretary to the State Government confirmed that the government had identified the defects through internal monitoring systems before a video surfaced on social media showing cracked walls at the construction site.



The government promptly terminated the contract with the responsible contractor and disengaged them from the project. The affected site has been flagged and scheduled for full remediation to meet the high structural and safety standards set by the administration. According to Professor Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary to the State Government, "This administration will not tolerate substandard work of any kind. The safety of our children, teachers, workers, and host communities remains our highest priority".

To prevent similar incidents across the 260 Smart Schools under construction, the government has established a three-tiered quality control and monitoring mechanism:

- Local Government Engineers*: Serve as the first line of supervision

- Ministry of Works and Infrastructure*: Conducts technical oversight and quality assurance

- Governor's Delivery Unit*: Provides high-level, independent verification of project milestones

The Enugu State Government has reiterated its commitment to delivering world-class, safe, and durable educational infrastructure. The administration will not tolerate substandard work and has assured the public that it will uphold the highest standards in all infrastructural projects.
