Eight Internet Fraudsters Convicted and Sentenced

The Federal High Court in Calabar has convicted and sentenced eight internet fraudsters to various jail terms for offences bordering on criminal impersonation, money laundering, love scam, and possession of fraudulent messages. The convicts include Azubuike Chibuike Victor, Israel David John, Chimela Chidiebere, Okonkwo Chidiebere, Odenigbo Victor Chika, Prosper Emeka Chinonso, Victor Etim Afaha, and Dennis Ategwu Adah.



The convicts pleaded guilty to one and two-count separate charges preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges included impersonation, money. The EFCC alleged that the convicts used social media platforms to commit their crimes, with some impersonating individuals and others taking possession of proceeds from unlawful activities.

The court sentenced the convicts to various jail terms or fines. Azubuike Chibuike Victor, Chimela Chidiebere, Okonkwo Chidiebere, Odenigbo Victor Chika, Prosper Emeka Chinonso, Victor Etim Afaha, and Dennis Ategwu Adah were sentenced to six months jail term or a fine of N1,000,000 each. Israel David John was sentenced to three months jail term on both counts or a fine of N1,000,000.

The court also ordered two of the convicts, Dennis Ategwu Adah and Victor Etim Afaha, to restitute $300 and €100 respectively to their victims. If the victims are not found, the convicts are to pay the restituted sums to the Federal Government through the EFCC Proceeds of Crime Account. Additionally, the court ordered the forfeiture of the convicts' mobile phones, which will be auctioned and the proceeds deposited into the EFCC's Proceeds of Crime Account.

The convicts were arrested by operatives of the Uyo Zonal Directorate of the EFCC between January and June 2025. They were charged to court and convicted after pleading guilty to the charges. The EFCC's efforts demonstrate its commitment to tackling internet fraud and other financial crimes in the country.
