EdoSEMA, Stakeholders Conduct Joint Assessment of Flood-Ravaged Community
The Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA), in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and officials of the Ovia North-East Local Government Council, has conducted a joint assessment visit to the flood-affected Owan Community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area (LGA) of Edo State.
The severe flood disaster submerged hundreds of buildings, farmlands, and household properties, leaving numerous residents homeless and disrupting livelihoods. The government agencies visited the community to sympathize with victims and evaluate the extent of the damage.
The Executive Secretary of EdoSEMA, Hon. Jerry Idahosa, explained that the visit was directed by the Edo State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, as part of commitments to guarantee the well-being of affected residents. The State Government has pledged to provide immediate humanitarian assistance and long-term recovery support.
- Identify and document the number of displaced persons, particularly vulnerable groups such as women and children
- Evacuate affected residents to temporary shelters for their safety
- Explore long-term solutions, including possible relocation of the community to a safer environment
Residents of the community have called for more sustainable interventions, disclosing that flooding has become a regular occurrence during the rainy season. The community has requested permanent resettlement and assistance from the government to rebuild and find lasting solutions to the recurring crisis.
The Edo State Government has pledged to expedite emergency relief while exploring long-term solutions to address the flood disaster. The government has assured affected residents of its commitment to providing support and assistance.
