Edo State Govt Champions Autism Awareness, Promotes Inclusivity and Support
The Edo State Government, through its Office of the First Lady, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has led an autism awareness and sensitization campaign aimed at dispelling misconceptions and fostering inclusivity for individuals with autism in the State. The event, themed "Advancing Neurodiversity and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," was held at the New Festival Hall and brought together stakeholders to promote awareness, acceptance, and support for individuals with autism.
The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, reiterated the State Government's commitment to supporting individuals with autism through funding, policy initiatives, and other measures. She called for a society that promotes inclusivity and provides a comfortable environment for concerned individuals to thrive. The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomole, advocated for inclusion for autistic individuals and dispelled common myths about autism, emphasizing that it is neither a disease nor a spiritual issue. He stressed that autism is a neurodevelopmental condition and that people with autism have the capacity to live fulfilling and productive lives when given the chance. Dr. Oshiomole urged stakeholders to challenge stigma and promote acceptance, inclusion, and support for individuals with autism.
The Campaign's scope goes beyond awareness, focusing on providing meaningful support and creating inclusive environments that allow every child to thrive. Dr. Oshiomole emphasized the need to change attitudes, promote inclusion, and build support systems that allow every child, irrespective of where they fall on the spectrum, to live a life of dignity and purpose.
The event featured musical and drama performances, poetry recitations, and art exhibitions from special needs children, showcasing their unique abilities. The highlight of the event was an auction of the students' artworks, testifying to their talents and creativity. The Programme also included discussions on speech therapy, occupational therapy, autism nutrition, and other topics relevant to supporting individuals with autism.
The Edo State Government's initiative has been commended by parents of children with autism, who expressed gratitude and urged the Government to sustain its efforts.
