Edo State Government Reaffirms Commitment to Healthcare Workers' Welfare

The Edo State Head of Service, Dr. Anthony Okungbowa, has reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Monday Okpebholo's administration to the welfare of healthcare workers across the state. Dr. Okungbowa assured healthcare workers that the state government is making the necessary efforts to address their concerns and improve their working conditions.

Dr. Okungbowa acknowledged the critical role medical personnel play in the state's healthcare system and highlighted the alarming rate of brain drain in the sector due to the "Japa syndrome". He noted that the government is making conscious efforts to provide timely promotions, entitlements, and improved salaries for healthcare workers.

The Head of Service emphasized the need to keep healthcare workers in the state by offering meaningful incentives, rather than just relying on their commitment to their profession. He stated that the government is aware of the value of their expertise and wants to utilize it for the benefit of the system.

Dr. Okungbowa disclosed that the state government is considering a review of the retirement age for medical personnel, citing advances in medical science and the longer life expectancy due to these improvements. This move is expected to enable the state to fully utilize the expertise of medical personnel for a longer period.

The Head of Service also assured healthcare workers that the recruitment exercise conducted in May 2025 would be finalized soon, addressing staffing gaps and reducing the strain on existing personnel.

The Edo State government's commitment to the welfare of healthcare workers is expected to boost their morale and motivation, ultimately leading to improved healthcare services in the state. The government's efforts to address brain drain and retain healthcare workers will likely have a positive impact on the state's healthcare system.
