Edo State Government Extends Condolences to Family of Young Flood Victim, Urges Residents to Prioritize Safety

The Edo State Government has paid a condolence visit to the family of Master Nathan Spencer, a schoolboy who tragically lost his life in a recent flood incident in the Uselu area of Egor Local Government. The visit was led by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, who represented the State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo. The Commissioner was accompanied by the Principal of Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA) and the Executives of Egor Local Government Council.



The Commissioner described the loss as painful, noting that Nathan was a child with immense potential. He emphasized that the tragedy affected not just the family but the entire State, highlighting the need for collective action to prevent such incidents in the future. The Governor admonished parents on their decisions, calling for care and urging them to prioritize safety in their choices.

The Executive Secretary of EdoSEMA, Hon. Jerry Idahosa, stressed the need for awareness and patience during rainfall. He pointed out that most floods in areas like Uselu are short-lived and that little delays could equate maximum safety. Hon. Idahosa cautioned that poor waste disposal continues to block drainage systems and worsen flooding, emphasizing that EdoSEMA is working with the Ministry of Environment and the Waste Management Board to educate the public on proper practices.

The Chairman of Egor Local Government Council, Hon. Dr. Ighodalo Kelvin Eguakun, urged residents to avoid moving through flooded areas during the rainy season. He assured that the Council was working to clear drains and maintain infrastructure, but needed the understanding and support of residents. Nathan's father, Mr. Paul Spencer, appreciated the Government for its support, acknowledging the officials' presence and concern.

The State and Local governments pledged to stand by the family and to continue efforts to improve safety across the State. The visit ended with prayers for the family, and a commitment to work together to prevent future loss of life. The Government's commitment to improving safety is evident in its efforts to clear drains, maintain infrastructure, and educate the public on proper waste disposal practices.
