Edo State Government Educates Youths on Dangers of Drug Abuse
The Edo State Government, through its Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has hosted a sensitization event to educate young people about the dangers of drug and substance abuse. The event, held at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), was part of the government's "Catch Them Young" Initiative and commemorated the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Chief Bisi Idaomi Esq., represented by the Director of Finance, Mrs. Mary A. Izeghaigbe, noted that drug abuse has become a pressing public health and security challenge. According to Chief Idaomi, drug abuse impairs mental health, destroys academic and career ambitions, severs family ties, fuels criminal behavior, and increases the likelihood of accidents and violence.
The Commissioner highlighted the Sen. Monday Okpebholo-led administration's dedication to tackling drug abuse, acknowledging its disastrous impact on individuals, families, and society. She urged young people to make informed choices that would shape their future and to be a generation that refuses to be lost to drugs.
The Vice Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Edoba Bright Omoregie, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Prof. Victor Ogie Igbineweka, acknowledged the significance of the event and the University's responsibility to its students. Prof. Omoregie emphasized the importance of teamwork in creating a secure and nurturing environment that fosters students' overall well-being and success.
The Director of Rehabilitation of the Ministry, Mr. Okoeguale Sylvester, presented on common signs and symptoms of substance abuse, equipping attendees with necessary knowledge to identify and address the issue.
The event featured a question-and-answer session, providing participants with the opportunity to gain clarity on issues related to substance abuse.
The event was attended by key officials, including the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Ekehuan Campus, UNIBEN, Prof. Buniyamin Ayinde; the Representative of the Registrar, Mrs. Toski Omage-Umeh; the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. Fredrick Ekhaise; and the Students' Union President, Comrade Agboola Israel Timilehin, among others.
