Edo State Government Champions Skills Acquisition as Key to Economic Empowerment and Sustainable Development

The Edo State Government has emphasized the importance of skills acquisition as a means to achieve economic empowerment and sustainable development. Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, highlighted the significance of acquiring skills beyond formal education, citing its potential to foster self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and contribute to the state's GDP.

Mrs. Anani made this assertion while addressing the Miss Edo International representatives at the Government House in Benin City. She stressed that having a skill is crucial for empowering oneself and becoming an entrepreneur, noting that millionaires are typically entrepreneurs who contribute to society and GDP. "Skills acquisition is very important to me," she said. "Beyond your education, you also need to have a skill. It is another way of empowering yourselves and I always say that to become a millionaire, you have to become an entrepreneur."

The Coordinator explained that societal needs create opportunities for entrepreneurship and productivity, enabling individuals to create their own jobs and contribute to their community through innovative solutions. She cited examples of potential business opportunities in catering, fashion design, and beauty services. "There is a need in society and you have to find a solution to it," she said. "People have birthday parties every day, so there is a need for catering. People want to dress nicely, so there is a need for fashion designers, people want to look good, so there is a need for beauticians."

Mrs. Anani reaffirmed her commitment to collaborating with Miss Edo International on its pet projects and advised that initiatives should prioritize giving back to society. The Organizer of Miss Edo International, Miss Debby Benson, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn new skills through the Edo Jobs program and plans to open her own business and train other ladies.

The Edo State Government's emphasis on skills acquisition demonstrates its commitment to promoting economic development and empowering its citizens. By acquiring skills, individuals can become more self-reliant, entrepreneurial, and contribute to the state's economic growth. The government's initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the state's economy and help to reduce unemployment and poverty.

The Edo State Skills and Development Agency (Edo Jobs) plays a crucial role in this initiative, providing valuable training and resources for individuals to acquire new skills. The agency's efforts are expected to help individuals develop the skills they need to succeed in the workforce and contribute to the state's economic growth.

Overall, the Edo State Government's emphasis on skills acquisition is a welcome development that is expected to have a positive impact on the state's economy and its citizens. By promoting entrepreneurship and skills acquisition, the government can help to create a more prosperous and sustainable future for the state.
