Delta State Govt Reminds Hoteliers of Obligation to Collect Guest Information to Combat Crime
The Delta State Government has reminded all hotel owners, managers, and front desk staff of their statutory obligation to collect and maintain accurate and detailed information from guests checking into their facilities. This reminder comes in light of recent incidents of ritual killings, sexual violence, rape, and murder in some hotels in the country, and a few reported cases in the state.
The Director General of the Delta State Bureau for Communications and Orientation, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, emphasized that collecting guest information is not only a legal requirement but also a critical tool in combating crimes in hotels. The information obtained from guests is crucial in aiding law enforcement agents to track down perpetrators and bring them to justice. By collecting and maintaining accurate guest information, hotels can play a significant role in preventing and investigating crimes.
Hotel front desk officers are required to obtain vital information from guests, including:
- Valid identification documents such as driver's license, international passport, national identity number, valid student identity card, permanent voters card, or any other government-issued identity
- Detailed addresses of guests' residences and workplaces
- Check-in and departure dates
- Arriving from and destination
- Detailed information about co-guest, especially female guests
- Telephone numbers
- Email address
- Guest's occupation or profession
The state government also reminded hoteliers of their obligation to provide security surveillance to monitor guest activities within their premises and facilities. Hotel management is expected to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and provide guest information to facilitate investigations and apprehend perpetrators. By working together, hotels and law enforcement agencies can ensure a safe and secure environment for guests and staff.
The state government, under the leadership of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, is committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all citizens and visitors. The government has invested heavily in operational vehicles and other logistic arrangements for law enforcement agents in the state. This commitment demonstrates the government's determination to combat crime and ensure public safety.
The Delta State Government urges all hotel owners, managers, and staff to take their responsibility seriously and ensure that the required information is collected from every guest without exception. By working together, the government and hoteliers can reduce the incidence of crime in hotels and ensure that Delta State remains a safe and secure place for everyone. The government encourages hotels to prioritize guest safety and security, and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to achieve this goal.
The Delta State Government calls on all hoteliers, hotel unions, and associations to adhere to their legal obligations and take proactive steps to prevent and combat crime in their establishments. By doing so, they can contribute to a safer and more secure environment for guests, staff, and the wider community.
