Court Fixes November 25 for Obiano’s Trial
The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled November 25, 2025, for the commencement of the trial of former Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano. Obiano is facing a nine-count charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The charges border on allegations of money laundering, diversion of funds, stealing, and corruption to the tune of N4 billion. The EFCC has been investigating Obiano's activities during his tenure as governor, which spanned from March 2014 to March 2022.
The case was recently reassigned to Justice Mohammed Umar after the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, transferred it from Justice Inyang Ekwo. Before the reassignment, the prosecution had presented five witnesses, including bankers and bureau de change operators, who testified against Obiano.
During the proceedings before Justice Ekwo, the prosecution presented evidence that included testimony from bankers and bureau de change operators. A banker testified that funds from Obiano's security vote account were diverted to six private companies. A bureau de change operator also disclosed that a proxy of the former governor paid N416 million into his company's account in exchange for $1.137 million.
The trial is now set to commence on November 25, 2025, before Justice Umar. The EFCC is expected to present its case against Obiano, and the court will determine the outcome of the trial based on the evidence presented.
The trial of Willie Obiano is a significant development, and the outcome will be closely watched. The EFCC's determination to prosecute the former governor for alleged crimes is a step towards ensuring accountability and transparency in governance.
