Breaking News: Student Sentenced to Death for Murdering Teacher in Plateau State
A High Court in Jos, Plateau State, has sentenced Odey Emmanuel, a final-year student of Government Science Technical College, Bukuru, to death by hanging for the murder of a teacher, Mr. Job Dashe. The court found Emmanuel guilty of culpable homicide punishable with death, contrary to Sections 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Law of Plateau State, 2017.
The tragic incident occurred on July 30, 2022, within the school premises, where Emmanuel stabbed Mr. Dashe in the chest with a knife after being disciplined for violating school rules by collecting double rations. Witnesses testified that Emmanuel became visibly agitated and confrontational after the disciplinary action, openly threatening the deceased.
The prosecution, led by the Plateau State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, presented strong evidence, including medical reports, eyewitness testimonies, and police findings that corroborated the sequence of events. The defense failed to disprove the overwhelming evidence brought forward by the state.
Hon. Justice S.J. Bakfur emphasized that such acts of violence within educational institutions pose a grave threat to society and must be met with the full force of the law. The judge noted the premeditated nature of the attack, the public setting in which it occurred, and the clear intent expressed by the defendant prior to the act.
Odey Emmanuel was therefore sentenced to death by hanging for culpable homicide punishable with death. This case highlights the severity of violent crimes in educational institutions and the need for strict adherence to the law.
