Bayelsa State Peace Architecture Calls for Mandatory Drug Test for Students

The Bayelsa State Peace Architecture (SPA) has called for mandatory drug testing for students before matriculation and graduation from higher institutions. This call was made following the rising trend of drug abuse among students and youths in the state. The SPA, which comprises peace agents from various security agencies and stakeholders, is advocating for a collaborative approach to address the menace of drug abuse.

The SPA has embarked on a sensitization campaign to tertiary institutions in Bayelsa State, including the Niger Delta University (NDU), to educate students on the dangers of drug abuse. The team was received by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of NDU, Professor Tonbara Barakabo-Kingdom, and other management staff.

The Secretary of the Bayelsa State Peace Architecture, Dr. Inebaraton Preye, highlighted the dangers of drug abuse and its consequences on individuals and society. He emphasized that the nexus between drugs and crime cannot be overemphasized, as users are often willing tools for violence.

The SPA is seeking collaboration with stakeholders, including management staff of tertiary institutions, to develop strategies and initiatives to mitigate drug use among students and youths. The team has also visited the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Emelah Gentle, and the Chairman of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Hon. Dr. Daniel Charles, to foster support for their initiative.

The SPA is also advocating for the establishment of the Bayelsa State Community Peace Commission, which will provide a framework for addressing security challenges and promoting peace in the state. The commission will work with stakeholders to develop policies and initiatives that promote peace and security.

The Bayelsa State Peace Architecture's call for mandatory drug testing for students is a step in the right direction to address the menace of drug abuse in the state. The organization's efforts to sensitize students and stakeholders on the dangers of drug abuse and promote peace and security are commendable.
