Bayelsa Govt Nullifies Suspension of Ikebiri Traditional Ruler, Sets Up Panel of Inquiry
The Bayelsa State Government has taken a decisive stance on the suspension of the paramount ruler of Ikebiri Community, declaring it illegal, null, and void. The Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, made the declaration at a meeting with stakeholders and feuding parties in the community at the Government House in Yenagoa.
According to Senator Ewhrudjakpo, the Bayelsa State Chieftaincy Law is clear on the matter. The law does not empower any individual or group to suspend or dethrone a government-recognized traditional ruler. Instead, only the Governor possesses the legitimate authority to remove a traditional ruler after fulfilling the requirements prescribed in the state Chieftaincy Law.
In light of the allegations leveled against the Amananawei of Ikebiri Community, His Royal Highness Francis Timi Odudu, the government has set up a 12-member panel to investigate the matter. The panel is chaired by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Mr. Irorodamie Komonibo, and includes prominent individuals such as the Chairman of the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council, King Bubaraye Dakolo; Commissioners for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Community Development, and Information; and the Coordinator of the Bayelsa State Community Safety Corps, Brig Gen. Eric Angaye.
The panel's terms of reference are comprehensive, and it is mandated to investigate several key issues. These include why the Ikebiri Community constitution has not been amended, how the 30% royalty is being shared, and issues causing frequent clashes in the community. The panel has been given one month to complete its assignment and submit its findings to the government.
The Deputy Governor has appealed to both parties to sink their differences in the collective interest of their community. He also warned against making processions or radio announcements that could confront the government, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the community.
The government's decision to set up a panel of inquiry demonstrates its commitment to resolving the dispute in a fair and transparent manner. The panel's findings will inform the government's final decision on the matter, and it is expected that the outcome will bring about lasting peace and stability in the Ikebiri Community.
