Bayelsa Governor Calls for Collective Effort Against Drug Abuse

The Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has emphasized the need for a collective effort in the fight against drug abuse in the country. Speaking at an event commemorating the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Yenagoa, the Governor stressed that the panacea to break the chains of drug abuse is to interrupt the production of harmful drugs.

According to the Governor, tackling the source of production, which is the root cause of substance abuse, would naturally cut off the chain of supply and consumption of such drugs. He called for more concerted effort in all communities in the state to get rid of the menace of drug abuse, which has become a significant threat to the well-being of citizens, particularly the youth.

The Governor expressed concern that despite efforts to fight drug abuse, there is still a noticeable spread of illicit drugs in the country. He noted that the state government is deeply concerned about the issue of drug abuse as it affects youth development and called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to establish local government offices, especially in areas where the rate of drug abuse is reportedly high in the state.

The Chairman of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Rtd), disclosed that the agency has made 66,000 arrests, secured 12,000 convictions, and has several suspects still facing prosecution over the last four years. However, he noted that a lot still needs to be done in terms of primary prevention to tackle the root causes of drug abuse.

The Governor's call for collective effort against drug abuse has been echoed by other stakeholders, who emphasized the need for a multi-faceted approach to tackle the problem. The event, which was organized by the Bayelsa State Drug Abuse, Addiction, Prevention and Rehabilitation Committee (BADAPARC) in collaboration with the NDLEA, highlighted the importance of collaboration between government agencies, civil society organizations, and individuals in the fight against drug abuse.

The theme of the event, "Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All," underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle drug abuse. The Governor's call for collective effort is a step in the right direction, and it is hoped that it will lead to increased collaboration and action to address the problem of drug abuse in the state and country at large.
