Bauchi Governor Sounds Alarm on Charcoal Production, Calls for Climate Resilience Legislation

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has expressed deep concern over the environmental destruction caused by charcoal production, identifying it as a major contributor to deforestation and climate change. The Governor made this known during a courtesy visit by representatives of Oxfam and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, where he decried the unchecked charcoal activities degrading the state's environment.



Governor Mohammed stressed that Bauchi State can no longer remain indifferent in the face of escalating ecological threats. He highlighted the need for urgent action to combat deforestation and promote environmental protection. The Governor reaffirmed his administration's commitment to environmental protection and called for coordinated efforts to address the issue.

The Governor expressed readiness to support legislative reforms that promote climate resilience across the state. He emphasized the importance of working together to address the challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation.

The Oxfam team called for the enactment of a dedicated climate and environmental protection law, emphasizing that a strong legal framework is essential for institutionalizing climate action and attracting international support.
