Atiku Abubakar Slams Tinubu And Demands Release of Detained Labour Activist

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has launched a scathing attack on the Tinubu administration for its handling of workers' welfare, citing the government's failure to pay wage awards to federal civil servants. Abubakar stated that the Federal Government owes four months of wage awards, amounting to ₦140,000 per worker, and accused the government of callous indifference and utter disdain for workers' welfare.



The Tinubu administration's decision to remove fuel subsidies on the day of his inauguration triggered an economic crisis marked by inflation, hunger, and despair. To mitigate the effects, the government promised to pay a wage award to federal civil servants pending the conclusion of negotiations on a new national minimum wage. However, it took the administration a staggering 10 months to arrive at a new minimum wage figure, and only six months of wage award arrears have been paid.

Abubakar highlighted the government's broken promises, stating that the administration's actions have left workers abandoned and struggling. He emphasized that the government's failure to fulfill its promises has led to widespread hardship and economic struggles for workers.

Abubakar also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Andrew Uche Emelieze, who was arrested and detained for attempting to organize a peaceful protest to demand the payment of overdue wage awards. Abubakar described Emelieze's detention as an affront to democracy and a chilling reminder of the authoritarian drift of the Tinubu administration.

Abubakar emphasized that Nigerian workers will not be silenced, intimidated, or forgotten, and that the government has a duty to act, not repress. He urged the government to engage in dialogue with workers and fulfill its promises to improve their welfare. Abubakar's statement serves as a rallying cry for workers and citizens who are struggling to make ends meet.

Abubakar's demand for the release of Comrade Emelieze and his call for the government to prioritize workers' welfare highlight the need for urgent action. The government must take concrete steps to address the economic hardship and ensure that workers' rights are protected.
