Akwa Ibom State Government Unveils Tree Crops Development Programme
The Akwa Ibom State Government has unveiled a bold new Tree Crops Development Programme aimed at driving agricultural prosperity and economic diversification in the state. Governor Umo Eno made the disclosure during a review meeting with the Akwa Ibom State Agriculture and Food Security Committee on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
The programme is designed to restore the state's leadership in oil palm production, expand tree crop plantations, and adopt high-yielding fresh fruit bunches to power agro-based enterprises. The Governor emphasized the urgency of harnessing the state's natural endowments and moving beyond dependence on crude oil.
The programme includes the full restoration and expansion of the Dakkada Oil Palm Estate and the revival of the Domestic Tree Crop Development Scheme to ramp up yields. The Governor directed the Agriculture and Food Security Committee to collaborate with the Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP) to develop a business case for implementation.
The Governor issued a two-week deadline for the submission of a comprehensive action plan to the government. He emphasized that the programme is not just an agricultural intervention but a foundational step in building a sustainable economy.
The Tree Crops Development Programme is part of the Governor's broader ARISE Agenda to boost productivity, generate employment, and ensure long-term economic sustainability for Akwa Ibom State. The programme is expected to lay the groundwork for jobs, exports, and sustainable food systems.
The programme is expected to have a significant impact on the state's economy and food security. By restoring the state's leadership in oil palm production and expanding tree crop plantations, the programme will create jobs, increase exports, and improve food security. The programme will also contribute to the state's economic diversification and sustainable development.
