Akwa Ibom State Government Takes Bold Steps to Drive Development and Youth Empowerment

The Akwa Ibom State Executive Council held a crucial meeting on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the EXCO Chambers, Government House, Uyo. The meeting, presided over by Governor Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, saw the attendance of key government officials, including the Deputy Governor, Secretary to the State Government, and Commissioners.

One of the key resolutions made during the meeting was the approval for the construction of a 2.15 Km dual carriage rigid pavement and the rehabilitation of a 0.8 Km dual carriage flexible pavement at Itam Industrial Park in Itu Local Government Area. This project aims to provide strategic infrastructure to support the growth and development of the industrial estate, contributing to the State's economic advancement. The government is committed to creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, and this project is a significant step in that direction.

The Executive Council also constituted a Committee to engage with the management of key investments, including Rafia City Hotels (Four Points by Sheraton), with a view to strengthening mutually beneficial business relationships. The Committee has 30 days to submit its report and is also mandated to design and propose a sustainable and efficient management framework for the Ibom Hotels and Apartments brand. This move is expected to boost the state's economy and create new opportunities for growth and development.

In a bid to enhance youth welfare, the council extended the N20,000 monthly allowance earlier approved for NYSC members serving in the state to all corps members of Akwa Ibom State origin serving across the nation. This decision aligns with the Renewed Hope – ARISE Youth Support Initiative and aims to cushion living expenses and promote the well-being of Corps members. The government is committed to supporting the youth and providing them with the necessary tools to succeed in life.

To improve security and preserve the aesthetics of the Ewet Housing Estate, Council directed all legitimate allottees of undeveloped plots and abandoned units to commence development within 90 days or risk revocation. The Ministry of Housing and the Akwa Ibom State Property and Investment Company (APICO) were mandated to ensure compliance. This move is expected to enhance the security and beauty of the estate, making it a desirable place to live and work.

The Executive Council received a progress briefing on preparations for the forthcoming event and directed the Planning Committee to fast-track all arrangements to ensure a timely and successful hosting of the event. The festival aims to discover and nurture the sporting talents of Akwa Ibom youths. This is a great opportunity for the state's youth to showcase their skills and talents, and the government is committed to supporting their development.

EXCO also reviewed updates on the International Hospital project and directed the Ministries of Health and Justice to finalize all outstanding legal and administrative processes to ensure the timely commencement of the project. This project is expected to provide world-class healthcare services to the people of Akwa Ibom State and beyond.

At the close of the meeting, the Executive Council, led by Governor Umo Eno, proceeded on an unscheduled inspection tour of projects within the Central Business District of Uyo. The sites visited included the 5,000-capacity Convention Centre, the Ibom Hotels, and the emerging ARISE Shopping City. The governor's commitment to ensuring the timely completion of these projects is evident in his leadership style.

The Akwa Ibom State Government's recent executive council meeting has yielded several key resolutions aimed at driving development and youth empowerment. The government's commitment to advancing the ARISE Agenda and improving the lives of its citizens is evident in the decisions made during the meeting. With these bold steps, the state is poised for growth and development, and its citizens can look forward to a brighter future.
