Abia State Governor Clarifies Borrowing and Defends Against Speculations

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has clarified that his administration will only borrow for investments, not consumption. The Governor made this statement during the welcome dinner organized by the Abia State Government for the Abia State Global Economic Advisory Council.

Governor Otti emphasized that his administration has not borrowed in the last 2 years and a month, contrary to claims by the opposition. He cited the recently published Debt profile report by the Debt Management Office (DMO), which put Abia first among the States that reduced their debts between March 2024 and March 2025.

According to the DMO report, Abia reduced its public debt exposure by 57.20% within the period under review. The Governor stated that his administration will borrow for investments that are regenerative, not for consumption.

Governor Otti also addressed speculations about joining the APC or the coalition currently being formed by some opposition elements. He stated clearly that he is still a member of the Labour Party and has no plans to decamp.

The Governor mentioned that the Supreme Court had resolved the crisis that threatened the survival of the Labour Party, and he believes that the few remaining issues will be resolved soon.

Governor Otti emphasized that his administration is focused on doing things right and creating an enabling environment for Abians to thrive. He highlighted the importance of good roads, clean environment, and access to portable water.

The Governor announced that his administration is working on making portable water available to the people, with plans to flag off water projects in Aba and Umuahia in the coming weeks.

Dr. Otti also disclosed that his administration has set up a Project Implementation Bureau, headed by Mr. Onyinye Nwosu, a former employee of General Electric (GE) in Canada.

The Governor thanked members of the Abia Global Economic Advisory Council for their sacrificial support and contributions, which have helped his administration record achievements in the last 2 years.
