Abia State Government to Partner with Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria

The Abia State Government has expressed interest in partnering with the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria (RRIN) to improve the state's economy through advanced rubber production. Governor Dr. Alex Otti made this known when he received a delegation of RRIN led by the Chairman of the Governing Board, Barr. Alphonsus Ogar Eba.

The partnership aims to harness the potential of rubber production in the state, increase productivity, and create jobs for the people. Governor Otti instructed the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Cliff Agbaeze, and his Industry and SME counterpart, Mazi Mike Akpara, to work out the modalities of the partnership for immediate implementation.

The partnership is expected to have a positive impact on the state's economy, increase the GDP, and create employment opportunities for the teeming unemployed youths in Abia State and beyond. The Governor noted that the partnership would also have downstream benefits, such as processing, packaging, and export of rubber products.

Governor Otti emphasized the importance of agricultural products and services, which were the pillars of Nigeria's economy before the advent of oil. He noted that Nigeria should not ignore these agro-services and products, which have the potential to drive economic growth.

The Executive Director of RRIN, Mrs. Lilian Nkechi Dongo, stated that the institute is mandated to research and develop rubber and other lettuce-producing plants. She emphasized that the partnership would assist in advancing rubber production in Nigeria and called for the support of the Abia State Government to host their international conference later in the year.
