Three Masqueraders Arrested and Arraigned for Assault in Enugu State

The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned and remanded three male suspects for their involvement in the assault and infliction of bodily harm on members of the public while celebrating the Oriokpa Masquerade.

The suspects, Emeka Eze (33), Omeke Uchechukwu (22), and Malachi Michael Nnaemeka (30), were arraigned before the Nsukka Magistrate Court on three principal charges:

1. Conspiracy

2. Demanding money with menaces

3. Causing grievous harm

The court adjourned the case to July 31, 2025, for further hearing.

The incident occurred on June 22, 2025, along Aku Road in Nsukka, where a male victim was hospitalized due to injuries sustained from the masqueraders' attack. A viral video captured the moment of the incident.

The three suspects were identified and arrested with the assistance of law-abiding community members, while others fled. The Commissioner of Police has ordered intensified efforts to apprehend the remaining members of the masquerade group who are currently at large.

The Commissioner of Police urges community leaders across Enugu State to caution their subjects against committing crimes under the guise of masquerade or other cultural celebrations.

The Enugu State Police Command remains committed to maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety, and protecting citizens' rights. The command's efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects and prevent similar incidents are ongoing.
