Plateau State Government Inaugurates Legal Aid Coordination Committee

The Plateau State Government, in collaboration with International IDEA, has launched the Plateau State Legal Aid Counsel Coordination Committee. This initiative aims to provide free legal assistance to indigent residents and vulnerable individuals across the state.

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang plans to set up Legal Aid Offices in each of the 17 Local Government Areas through the Office of the Public Defender Law. The committee will harmonize efforts across the justice ecosystem, ensuring quality legal support and coordinating all legal aid service providers.

The state currently has only six lawyers to serve over three million people, highlighting the need for increased access to justice. The establishment of these centers will offer non-litigious legal remedies, promoting alternative dispute resolution methods.

"The government is fully behind this initiative... The state is prepared to continue where IDEA stops," said the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.

"Justice is the bedrock of peace and social harmony. Without justice, conflict begins," emphasized the Gbong Gwom, Jos, Da Buba Gyang.

The committee's inaugural meeting is scheduled for June 30, 2025, where members will discuss key responsibilities, including quality assurance, case management, and stakeholder coordination.
