Plateau State First Lady Decries Sexual Violence in Conflict
Plateau State First Lady, Barr. Helen Mutfwang, has described sexual violence in conflict as a crime that destroys lives, violates human rights, and undermines prospects for peace, security, and justice. She stated this at an event commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict.
The event, marked at the Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos, drew traditional council members, civil society organizations, security agencies, and other stakeholders. The theme for this year's event was "Breaking the Cycle, Healing the Scars: Addressing the Intergenerational effects of conflict - Related Sexual Violence."
The First Lady noted that the State Government has taken concrete steps to address the issue of sexual violence, including the ongoing process to establish a Sexual Assault Referral Center (SARC) in the state. The center will provide essential services to victims and survivors of sexual violence.
Barr. Mutfwang expressed solidarity with survivors of sexual violence, acknowledging their resilience and courage. She emphasized that their voices will not be silenced and that perpetrators will not go unpunished.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Caroline Panglang Dafur, appreciated the First Lady for initiating the event, which marked the first time the day was being celebrated in the state. She prayed for an end to conflict and sexual violence in the state.
The keynote speaker, Prof. Funmi Para-Mallam, highlighted the importance of addressing sexual violence, noting that it is just one form of gender violence that people in Plateau and Nigeria have been subjected to. She also mentioned physical violence, emotional and psychological violence, harmful traditional practices, and socioeconomic violence.
Favour Samuel, representing Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), shared stories of abuse, exploitation, and abandonment, highlighting the devastating impact of conflict on vulnerable populations.
Goodwill messages were received from various stakeholders, including the People's Democratic Party (PDP) Women Leader, Justina Vrengle; Chairperson, Gender Commission, Barr. Olivia Dazyam; and Akpang Adagwom Izere, Rtd. Rev. Isaac Wakili, who all appreciated the initiative and urged everyone to join hands to eliminate sexual violence in conflict.
