Nigeria Police Arrested Masquerade in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command announced the arrest of three male suspects in connection with a viral video showing members of the Oriokpa Masquerade group physically assaulting innocent people in Nsukka on June 22, 2025.

The suspects, along with others still at large, allegedly took advantage of the Oriokpa Masquerade celebration to assault several people, inflicting bodily injuries. One victim was hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the attack.

The police, with the assistance of law-abiding community members, identified and apprehended the three suspects after they initially resisted arrest and fled the scene. The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered a thorough investigation into the case.

CP Giwa emphasized that masquerade celebrations are a sacred aspect of culture, but condemned the actions of those who exploited the occasion to commit crimes. He warned against using cultural festivities as a cover for trouble and assured that all those involved will be brought to justice.

The police are working to ensure that justice is served, and all those involved in the assault will face the consequences of their actions. The incident has sparked concern about the need for responsible behavior during cultural celebrations.
