Nasarawa Court Sentences Gospel Singer Timilehin Ajayi to Death for Murdering NYSC Member

A Nasarawa State High Court in Lafia has convicted and sentenced Nigerian gospel singer Timilehin Ajayi to death by hanging for the murder of Salome Adaidu, a 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member. Justice Simon Aboki presided over the case and ruled that the prosecution had successfully proved beyond reasonable doubt that Ajayi committed the offense.

Ajayi was accused of killing and dismembering Adaidu, his alleged girlfriend, at his residence in the Papalana axis of New Karshi in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The gruesome nature of the crime shocked the nation, with reports indicating that Ajayi had cut Adaidu's body into multiple parts.

During the trial, Ajayi pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of culpable homicide punishable by death under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria. However, the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including Ajayi's confession and physical evidence recovered from the crime scene, which led to his conviction.

The case has sparked widespread outrage and debate on social media, with many expressing horror at the crime's brutality. Adaidu's family has welcomed the court's decision, describing it as a step towards justice for their daughter.

Ajayi's legal team has not indicated whether they will appeal the verdict. Under Nigerian law, death sentences are subject to confirmation by the state governor, and appeals can prolong the process.
