Kogi Central District Gets Two New Smart Markets

In a bid to support the socioeconomic development of rural communities, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has announced the commencement of construction of two new smart markets in Okene and Okehi Local Government Areas of Kogi Central District.



The new markets will be located in the following areas:

Okene Market: Okuanatahu, Okene LGA, beside the new Okene General Hospital

Okehi Market: Oboroke market, Okehi LGA, utilizing the existing large expanse of land.

Each market will feature modern amenities, including:

40 open market stalls

40 closed shops

Toilets

Water supply

Car parks for loading trucks

Solar grid with sockets in shops and stalls

Street lights for security


The Senator emphasized that the new markets will provide conducive, functional, and safe spaces for market women, who play a vital role in driving socioeconomic development in rural communities. The market stalls and shops will be distributed freely on merit to market women, not sold.

The construction of the new markets is expected to be completed by November 2nd, 2025. The projects are fully funded by the Federal Government.

The Senator expressed excitement about the project, highlighting the importance of supporting market women and providing them with modern facilities to enhance their businesses.
