Israel Kills Iran's Military chief four days into Job
Ali Shadmani, Iran's wartime chief of staff and a trusted aide to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Tehran on June 17, 2025. He was appointed as the commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters just four days prior to his death. Here's what we know about the incident and Ali Shadmani.
A senior military official in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and a close associate of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He had previously held command roles in both the IRGC and the Iranian Army.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed responsibility for the airstrike, stating it was based on precise intelligence. This marks the second top Iranian general killed in a short span, escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
Iran has vowed retaliation, and the incident has led to a surge in global oil prices due to fears of a wider war.
Shadmani was appointed as the new commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters on June 13, 2025, after the previous commander, Major General Gholam Ali Rashid, was killed in an Israeli airstrike.
In October 2024, Shadmani faced EU sanctions, including asset freezes and a travel ban, for his role in transferring missiles and drones to Russia.
